Faculty Briefing – Introduction to Academic Freedom

Free speech and academic freedom continue to be divisive and misunderstood topics on university campuses across the country. As we head into the second half of UC Irvine’s Year of Free Speech, all facultymembers are invited to register to attend a virtual briefing on academic freedom.

Chancellor Howard Gillman and Michelle Deutchman, the executive director of the UC National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement will lead a presentation: Introducing Academic Freedom and Applying Academic Freedom Principles.

The presentation will discuss the similarities and key differences between academic freedom and free speech, as well as the evolution of the concept of academic freedom. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

This event is presented in partnership with the UCI Academic Senate.
